Donald A. Tapscott, President and Co-Founder of MMI, is a graduate of Park College Missouri (BS), George Washington University (MS), and Central Michigan University (MA). He has also completed various civilian and military educational courses including the Command and General Staff College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Special Forces Officers Course, and others. His current responsibilities incorporate company research project identification, financial management, technical proposal preparation, contract administration, investigation, automation, and overall project management. He has held various positions in the public and private sector and is active in a variety of civic and educational organizations.

Formed in January 1986, Materials Modification, Inc. (MMI) is a 100% minority owned closely held, competitive Virginia Corporation involved in the provision of materials research, engineering, and technology support services to the public and private sectors. MMI has won over 50 Phase I’s and 13 Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Awards from different branches of the Department of Defense, NASA, the Department of Commerce, and the National Science Foundation. The Phase II awards permit selective expansion of MMI’s research and testing facilities while continuing its primary objective of new product development. MMI personnel have performed on numerous projects including, the development of solid lubricants for space structures, the development of carbon-carbon pistons, clutches, and brakes, the laser polishing of sapphire and diamond thin films.

MMI is also developing product lines consistent with its additional research activities and MMI personnel actively consult with companies in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
